Ruth Gregory
Born in 1942 in Glasgow, Ruth 's secondary education was completed at Bearsden Academy in 1960. Her interest in mathematics then took her to Glasgow University, graduating Master of Arts in maths and physics in 1963. Then followed a year's teacher-training at Jordan Hill College of Education during which she also completed the Diploma of Education at university. Her teaching career began in Clydebank High School after which she taught in south-east London for a year.
Returning to Glasgow in 1966, Ruth taught in several schools before finishing her second degree, a Master of Education from Glasgow University in 1969. In 1974, she moved with my husband and three children to Oban in the West Highlands and taught there for 26 years before retiring in 2000. During this time Ruth changed the focus of her career to Guidance, completing the Certificate of Guidance from St Andrew's College and becoming a Principal Teacher of Guidance in 1987. In 1995 Ruth and her husband had a hardworking but exhilarating year in Melbourne, Australia on an exchange arranged through LECT. On her return and as a direct result of the exchange, she set up a national committee in Scotland for the promotion of the Peer Support Program of social education, already well-established throughout Australia. Over the following 3 years the committee organised and ran annual workshops, training around 210 individuals in the programme.
Ruth has a keen interest in social justice and in politics, has been a member of Glasgow Children's Panel, served on Oban Community Council for many years and held major office in my local Constituency Association of the Scottish National Party. Now retired and living in Ayrshire, Bill and Ruth look forward to fresh challenges, to further travel in Australia to visit their two sons and their families and to doing their "granny and grandpa act" at home with their daughter's family!
